Stewards of Louisiana’s Environment

Louisiana’s natural environment is world famous for its unique beauty and diversity. From Northern forests to Southern wetlands, Louisiana’s ecosystems are as iconic as the state’s lively culture. In an ever-changing world, it takes a great deal of work and dedication to maintain these majestic environments. Fortunately, the Louisiana Wildlife Federation, Louisiana Land Conservation Assistance Network, and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries are three organizations that make sure the outdoors continues to thrive in Louisiana.

Louisiana Wildlife Federation

The Louisiana Wildlife Federation (LWF) was incorporated in 1940 as a response to the excessive environmental exploitation that was occurring in Louisiana at the time. Today, the LWF is one of the leading organizations protecting the Bayou State’s ecosystems. With over 8,000 members spread across 19 state and local affiliated clubs, the LWF represents a diverse coalition of sportsmen, conservationists, and other outdoors enthusiasts.

In over 80 years of committed work, the LWF has played a leading role in establishing many crucial environmental programs in Louisiana. These include the Louisiana Natural and Scenic Rivers Program, the Protection for Conservation Fund, and the Wastewater Treatment Systems Regulation. The Louisiana Wildlife Federation also collaborates with various organizations like the Orleans and Baton Rouge Audubon Societies, the Woodlands Conservancy, and Friends of the Atchafalaya to tackle coastal land loss and implement coastal restoration initiatives in Southeast Louisiana.

Louisiana Land Conservation Assistance Network

The Land Conservation Assistance Network (LandCAN) is a national organization that focuses on empowering private landowners with information and resources that are helpful for managing land responsibly. Accordingly, the Louisiana Land Conservation Assistance Network implements this service for the diverse ecosystems of Louisiana.

Unlike the LWF, the Louisiana LandCAN is not an advocacy group. Instead, their goal is to supply information that private landowners and environmental professionals to use as they see fit. Louisiana LandCAN helps land managers learn to successfully navigate everything from alternative energy to wildlife management to taxes. Current LandCAN partners include the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the US Forest Service, and the Cotswold Foundation.

Unlike the LWF and the Louisiana LandCAN, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is a government agency. Their extensive responsibilities include supervising all of the state’s renewable natural resources, wildlife, and aquatic life. In addition to managing Louisiana’s ecosystems, the LDWF directs the state’s response to challenges like implementing sustainability measures and fighting habitat destruction.

The LDWF’s organizational structure covers a broad set of roles, ranging from research to education to law enforcement. The Department combines its knowledge and best predictions for the future into strategic plans that guide state policy for years to come. A healthy relationship with the LDWF is essential for every environmental organization and enthusiast in Louisiana.
