History of the Mystic Krewe of Olympia
In 1965, over lunch at The Galley Restaurant near the Covington Courthouse, a visionary group of friends sparked the idea of bringing a “New Orleans style” parade to their community. The founding members, including Lieutenant Colonel Earl Wilson, Warren Illing Sr., H. M. “Ole” Olson, and James Heinritz, envisioned an event that would resonate with St. Tammany residents. The conversation quickly turned into plans, and within a week, the Mystic Krewe of Olympia was born.
The Mystic Krewe of Olympia has become a cornerstone of Covington’s Mardi Gras celebrations. The krewe’s commitment to preserving the essence of a “New Orleans style” parade while contributing to local philanthropy reflects its enduring significance. The annual ball, where the identities of the queen, maids, and ladies-in-waiting are revealed, adds an air of mystery and tradition to the festivities.
The Mystic Krewe of Olympia stands as one of the oldest krewes in St. Tammany Parish, boasting more than two-hundred members.
