In 1965, over lunch at The Galley Restaurant near the Covington Courthouse, a visionary group of friends sparked the idea of bringing a “New Orleans style” parade to their community. The founding members, including Lieutenant Colonel Earl Wilson, Warren Illing Sr., H. M. “Ole” Olson, and James Heinritz, envisioned an event that would resonate with St. Tammany residents. The conversation quickly turned into plans, and within a week, the Mystic Krewe of Olympia was born.

The Mystic Krewe of Olympia has become a cornerstone of Covington’s Mardi Gras celebrations. The krewe’s commitment to preserving the essence of a “New Orleans style” parade while contributing to local philanthropy reflects its enduring significance. The annual ball, where the identities of the queen, maids, and ladies-in-waiting are revealed, adds an air of mystery and tradition to the festivities.

The Mystic Krewe of Olympia parade, now in its 58th year, will roll on Saturday, February 3 at 6PM. The parade follows a carefully planned route through the heart of Covington, Louisiana. Starting at the intersection of North Columbia Street and Jefferson Street, the procession winds its way through East Boston Street, South Jefferson Avenue, East 15th Avenue, South Tyler Street, West 23rd Avenue, and North Jefferson Avenue. The spectacle concludes by returning to its origin at the intersection of North Columbia Street and Jefferson Avenue.

The parade’s mystique lies in its route and in the creativity displayed through floats, trucks, horses, and marching bands. One unique aspect is the careful concealment of King Zeus’s identity and the parade theme until the grand reveal on parade night, adding an element of surprise and excitement.
